The Superman film series refers to the original series of live-action film projects based on the DC Comics character Superman. The original movie series spanned the years 1978 to 1987, encompassing four feature films. A quasi-sequel, Superman Returns, was released in 2006. The Superman film series was put together by the father and son team of Alexander and Ilya Salkind and director Richard Donner. Donner directed the first two films in the series with Richard Lester co-directing Superman II. Donner later edited together a direct-to-video treatment of his vision of the film, which has come to be known as "The Richard Donner Cut". Richard Lester took on the directing chops solo for the second sequel, aptly titled, Superman III, with Sidney J. Furie directing the universally reviled Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. In the original quadrilogy, the role of Superman was played by actor Christopher Reeve. Nearly twenty years later, a soft-sequel film, Superman Returns was released and was directed by Bryan Singer and produced by Warner Bros. and his Singer's studio, Bad Hat Harry Productions. This time around, the man of steel was portrayed by relatively unknown actor Brandon Routh.
