A socialite is one who comes from obvious wealth, but doesn't really seem to have a job of any kind. A person who is poor and doesn't have a job is called a bum. To compensate for the extra time they seem to have on their hands, socialites keep busy by maintaining a very public profile, either by hosting lavish parties, attending high-profile social gatherings, or becoming involved in a program that focuses on the fine art of socializing such as charities, museum galas, and entertainment venues. In modern parlance, the acceptable term for a socialite is a "Kardashian".
