Sling Blade is an American independent film written, directed and starring Billy Bob Thornton. It was produced by Miramax Films and distributed in the U.S. through the Shooting Gallery. The movie premiered on November 27th, 1996. Sling Blade tells the story of Karl Childers, played by Thornton - a mentally disturbed simpleton from rural Arkansas, who is remanded to a hospital after murdering his adulterous mother and her lover. After finally being released, the simple-minded Carl befriends a young boy named Frank Wheatley and becomes involved in his family. The movie also stars Dwight Yoakam as antagonist Doyle Hargraves, J.T. Walsh as fellow mental patient Charles Bushman, John Ritter as Vaughan Cunningham, Lucas Black as the protagonist Frank Whestley and Natalie Canerday as Frank's mother, Linda Wheatley.
