The Sea of Japan played a role in the 1954 daikaiju film, Gojira. The fictional Oto Island was located in the Sea of Japan and it was the first setting seen in the film. In the movie, the awakened monster Gojira attacked several shipping vessels, destroying them with his atomic breath, leaving few survivors. Those who did live, were rescued and taken to Oto Island where an emergency triage unit had been established.
