- Based on the comic character created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, which in turn is based Red Sonya as created by Robert E. Howard.
- Despite Brigitte Nielsen playing the title character, Arnold Schwarzenegger still received top billing.
- Brigitte Nielsen received a Razzie Award for Worst New Star for this film and Rocky IV, and was nominated for the Worst Actress, also in the 1986 Razzie Award ceremony. Sandahl Bergman also received a nomination for the Worst Supporting Actress in the same ceremony.
