Period films are movies that take place during a particular time period. The time era being presented is always in the past and is reflective of a real world setting. Movies that take place in the future are classified under science fiction and are not period films. Movie that take place in fictional realities, or fictional locations, such as Aladdin are not considered period films either. To make things even more inclusive, the time era being presented in the movie needs to take place more than just a few years ago. The idea is that it is supposed to represent a snapshot from a particular era in world history. Period films differ slightly from historical films in that they usually embody a fictional storyline set within the trappings of an real-world time period.
