In March of 1976, when George Lucas was filming the first Star Wars movie, he filmed in the deserts of Tunisia for the scenes taking place on the planet Tatooine. He returned to Tunisia years later to shoot the prequel film Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The Dune Sea was shot in the Grand Dune, while shots of the Lars family homestead were filmed at Hôtel Sidi Driss and Chott el Jerid. In Episode I, shots of the slave quarters in Mos Espa were filmed in Ksar Medenine.
The original story of Aladdin from the Middle East folk tale chronicled in One Thousand and One Nights took place in the Maghreb. This was later used as the inspiration behind the fictional kingdom of Agrabah seen in Disney's Aladdin (which was likely located in the Middle East) and not Northern Africa).
