- "And list'nin to some big out-a-town Jasper hearin' him tell about horse-race gamblin'. Not a wholesome trottin' race, no! But a race where they set down right on the horse!"

A horse race is an equestrian sporting event in which a very small, teensy-tiny man rides atop a horse and coaxes it into running around a race track, while competing against other horses who are also navigated by very small people riding upon their backs. The most prestigious horse racing event in the United States is the Kentucky Derby, which is held annually every May in Louisville, Kentucky. A popular adjunct festivity amongst spectators is placing wagers on which horse and rider they believe is favored to win. Whenever a person loses a bet, they tear up their betting slip and throw the pieces onto the ground in frustration. This happens every single time. Nobody can explain why.
