Heathers is an American feature film of the teen drama genre. It was directed by Michael Lehmann with a script written by Daniel Waters. It was produced by and distributed through New World Pictures and premiered in Italy in October, 1988. It was released theatrically in the United States on March 31st, 1989. The film stars Winona Ryder as high school student Veronica, Christian Slater as bad-boy J.D. and Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk and Kim Walker as the three eponymous "Heathers" of the film; Heather Duke, Heather McNamara and Heather Chandler (respectively). The premise of the movie revolves around Veronica, who is inherently a social outcast, but finds herself attached to the popular girls' clique at school. Enter J.D., a rebel with a cause, who inspires Veronica to lash out against expected social norms. Due to its themes of anti-establishment and its criticism of high school social hierarchy, the movie earned itself a small degree of cult status amongst teens during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Now, it is largely forgotten. DVD releases of the film can usually be found in the $5 bins at Walmart.
