A guard is usually a privately and formally employed person who is paid to protect property, assets, or people. In modern context, the proper term for this is security guard. Often, security officers are uniformed and act to protect property by maintaining a high visibility presence to deter illegal and inappropriate actions, observing (either directly, through patrols, or by watching alarm systems or video cameras) for signs of crime, fire or disorder; then taking action and reporting any incidents to their client and emergency services as appropriate.
When it comes to royal families or heads of state, one who serves as bodyguard is also referred to as Captain of the Guard. The Captain of the Guard is the commanding position of a military security force, though the position does not necessarily mean that the individual actually holds a captain's rank.
