Donnie Darko is an independent American feature film of the science fiction and drama genres. It deals with themes of time travel and chronal paradox. The movie was written and directed by Richard Kelly. It was produced by Flower Films in association with Pandora. It was first screened at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19th, 2001, before opening to limited theatrical release in the United States. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal as the eponymous Donald Darko, with real-life sister Maggie Gyllenhaal as his fictional sister, Elizabeth Darko, Daveigh Chase as Samantha Darko, Holmes Osborne as Eddie Darko, Mary McDonnell as Rose Darko, James Duval as Frank the Bunny, and Patrick Swayze as Jim Cunningham.
