Daikaiju, often shortened to just kaiju, is a Japanese word that means "strange beast," but often translated in English as "monster". Specifically, it is used to refer to a genre of film entertainment that began in the 1950s and gained popularity throughout the 1960s and 70s. The most famous example of which is the Toho Company staple, Godzilla. The popularity of Godzilla films has spawned a veritable legion of similar creatures including Mothra, Anguirus, Rodan, Gamera, King Ghidorah, Yongary, Mechani-Kong and many more.
