The Columnist is a Dutch horror film of the psychological thriller genre. It was directed by Ivo van Aart with a screenplay written by Daan Windhorst. The movie was produced by NL Film and first released on the internet in the Netherlands on December 20th, 2019. It began making the festival circuit on January 8th, 2020. The film stars Katja Herbers in the lead role of Femke Boot.
Plot[]
A woman named Femke Boot is a columnist for a Dutch news publication, who is under pressure from her publishers to produce a new book. Further, she has become obsessed with all of the unsavory commentary that has been levied against her through social media such as Twitter and Facebook. Although her peers encourage her to ignore it, she cannot, and she finds herself spiraling further into a state of depression. She tries to shield her teenage daughter Anna from all of this, but conversely, Anna is caught up in her own free-speech advocacy for her school.
Femke befriends a horror novelist named Steven Dood, who has a reputation for having a crass and dismissive demeanor. This is all an act however, and he is actually a kind and caring person. As their acquaintance evolves into a romantic relationship, Stepven moves in with Femke and Anna.
Femke continues to obsess over the hateful bullying directed at her by the online community. She decides to investigate these agitators on her own, and determines the actual names and addresses of the various bullies, one of whom happens to be her neighbor. She approaches her neighbor as he is doing roof work and pushes him off the roof to his death. This excites Femke, and she cuts off his middle finger with a shovel as a trophy. This begins what will become an exhausting spree of revenge murders against the online community.
