Collinsport is a coastal community located on the Eastern shore of Maine. It was founded (originally) in the late 1600s by English entrepreneur Joshua Collins, who established not only his family lineage there, but also a thriving fishing fleet and cannery, which became the backbone of the town for generations. Other accounts state that Joshua didn't establish Collinsport until the late 18th century. By the 1970s, nearly everyone in town bore some sort of connection to the powerful Collins family, many of whom were employed by their business enterprises. Various points of interest in Collinsport include Collinwood, which was the ancestral Gothic mansion of the Collins family, as well as Eagle Hill Cemetery, where many of the family members were buried, St. Eustace Island, which was a marshy wetlands environment that contained an old dilapidated chapel monastery, as well as everyone's favorite drinking establishment, the Blue Whale.
Points of interest[]
- Widows' Hill
- Widows' Hill was the name of a cliff overlooking the coastline on the Collinwood estate. The shores of the beach surrounding Widows' Hill were a short distance away from the northern coves of St. Eustace Island. In July of 1797, Josette DuPres took her own life by leaping off of the cliff onto the rocks below. Although other people may have used the cliff’s edge as a means of suicide, Josette is the only person on record known to have killed themselves there. The region earned its name due to the fact that Josette’s body was found adorned in a French wedding gown.
