The Collins Canning Company is a fictional business featured in the 2012 film Dark Shadows. It is based on the Collins Cannery, which is from the original 1960s Gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, from which the film is loosely based.
Collins Canning Co. was founded in the late 18th century by Joshua Collins and formed the backbone of the fishing industry for Collinsport, Maine for generations. By the early 1970s however, the business had fallen upon hard times, owing largely to the establishment of a rival fishing fleet, Angelbay, which was founded by a witch known as Angelique Bouchard.
By 1972, the cannery was still in operation, but was poorly staffed, though Collins family matriarch, Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, admitted that that they still had three ships in the fleet.
An 18th century ancestor, Barnabas Collins, who was an immortal vampire, vowed to bring his family back to its former glory and prosperity and used his own hidden wealth to restore the cannery.
The interior of the main building became the scene of an epic battle between Barnabas and Angelique - a battle that Barnabas ultimately lost. Angelique chained him up inside of a coffin and left him inside the building as she then blew it up. Fortunately, Barnabas' young cousin, David Collins managed to free him before Angelique could destroy the building.
