Casablanca is an American feature film of the romance and war genres. It was directed by Michael Curtiz and written by Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein and Howard Koch based upon the stage play by Murray Burnett and Joan Alison titled Everybody Comes to Rick's. The movie was produced by Warner Bros. and released theatrically in the United States on January 23rd, 1943 (though still largely considered a 1942 film). Largely regarded by viewers and critics as one of the greatest romance films of all time, Casablanca was nominated for eight Oscars at the 1944 Academy Awards, winning three in the categories of Best Picture, Best Director and Best Writing. The movie stars Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine - an American expatriate who operates a bar out of the city of Casablanca in Morocco at the height of World War II. Ingrid Bergman co-stars as the leading lady Ilsa Lund - a former lover of Rick's, who now needs his help with smuggling her current paramour Victor Laszlo (played by Paul Henreid) out of the country. Other stars include Claude Rains as the corrupt police captain Louis Renault, Conrad Veidt as Major Heinrich Strasser, Sydney Greenstreet as Signor Ferrari and Peter Lorre as Ugarte.
