A bartender is an industry professional trained to mix and serve alcoholic beverages at a licensed bar, inn, or restaurant. In addition to mixing drinks and serving nachos, bartenders are often called upon to serve as listening posts to inebriated customers who wish to speak upon their woes. In this capacity, bartenders must also work as pseudo-psychiatrists, always willing to offer a sympathetic ear to someone in need. Some bartenders, such as Ackmena, are also known to sing to their patrons to get them to calm down after she tells them that its closing time.

  • Don Jon: The main character, Don Martello, states that he is a bartender, but he is never shown at his place of employment. Other bartenders can be seen at the various nightclubs that he visits.
  • Shining, The: At the Overlook Hotel, the newly-hired caretaker Jack Torrance found his way into the lounge and began speaking with the bartender, Lloyd. Jack had no idea that Lloyd was actually a ghost and that the lounge he was in was actually dark and empty. Lloyd maintained a straight smile as he listened to Jack bitching about his wife and kid and kept sliding him drinks.
  • Star Wars Holiday Special, The: Ackmena was one of the bartenders in the Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine, and she was a favorite personage of the regular patrons there. Unlike the day shift bartender, Wuher, Ackmena's friendliness and open personality livened the atmosphere of the room immensely. She would routinely lend money to needy patrons and offer free drinks on special occasions. Assisting her at the bar was a diminutive female barmaid (name unknown), and a tall, blue-faced bouncer named Tork. Shortly after the Battle of Yavin, Imperial Intelligence suspected subversive activity was taking place on Tatooine. As such, a mandatory curfew was placed on Mos Eisley forcing everyone to return to their homes. The patrons at Chalmun's were extremely put out by the decree and became unruly. Ackmena assuaged growing tempers by offering a round of drinks to the entire room – on the house. In order to keep everything as amicable as possible, she began singing a song entitled "Goodnight, But Not Goodbye". Ackmena and Tork successfully convinced everyone to leave the cantina peacefully.
