Judah Lewis and Samara Weaving in The Babysitter.
A babysitter is a person who sits on babies. While this may seem cruel at first, it can also be quite entertaining for some spectators. The term babysitter may also apply to an individual who is asked or hired to monitor a child while the parents are away. Sometimes this may take the form of a relative or loved one. Sometimes it may be a teenager from the neighborhood, in which case, a certain measure of reciprocity is expected for services rendered, usually in the form of money. People in the professional work services who fulfill these functions are not called babysitters, but nannies.
In the Halloween film series, there have been several babysitter characters. Judith Myers was the teenage sister of young Michael Myers, who was charged with keeping watch over him on Halloween night. Judith dismissed her duties in favor of making love to her boyfriend. Something within her brother snapped and he murdered by stabbing her multiple times with a butcher knife. As an adult, Michael still had a mad-on for babysitters. Breaking free of the mental hospital where he had been detained for the past fifteen years, he returned to his old neighborhood in Haddonfield and sought out two babysitters of note. One was Annie Brackett, who had been taking care of young Lindsey Wallace. The other was Michael's own sister, Laurie Strode, who had been babysitting Tommy Doyle that evening. Though he succeeded in killing Brackett, Laurie Strode managed to escape.
