Asphyxia is a condition wherein a person's body is denied access to oxygen. Prolonged asphyxia will result in possible brain damage and death. In film, one of the most infamous scenes of asphyxia was the climax of the 1975 drama film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The protagonist of the film, mental patient Randall "R.P" McMurphy undergoes severe electro-shock therapy, which basically puts him into a near vegetative state. Another mental patient named Chief, puts him out of his misery by smothering him with a pillow.
