Amityville is an incorporated village located in Long Island in the state of New York. It is in the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County. The town gained infamy in 1974 when, on November 13th, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. murdered his parents and four siblings with a Marlin 336C rifle in their home at 112 Ocean Avenue. In 1975, George and Kathy Lutz and Kathy's children moved into the DeFeo house, but vacated the home after only twenty-eight days claiming to have been terrorized by demonic phenomena during their brief time there. Both incidents provided the foundation for a book by Jay Anson called The Amityville Horror, which was adapted into a feature film in 1979 and yielded numerous sequels and spin-offs. The Lutz' claims of paranormal activity have long since been debunked and are largely considered to be a hoax perpetuated by George Lutz.

This massacre is widely claimed to have given the location its status as being "cursed", as asserted by future residents George and Kathy Lutz, who moved into the house a year later, only to quickly vacate after only a few weeks, citing numerous instances of supernatural demonic activity.
